"How To Effectively Value And Risk Manage Indexed Swing Contracts" - Friday 5th March 2010 led by Lacima Group

Is the accurate valuation of swing contracts presenting a challenge for your organisation? European energy companies increasingly enter into long-term gas purchase contracts with elements of swing in order to secure reliable supplies for their customers and end-users.

Swing contracts have many operational constraints that impact on valuation and risk analysis. Furthermore, the indexation feature of swing contracts, where the price of the gas delivered is usually indexed on a basket of commodities, presents complications in their valuation and risk management. In order to exploit the optionality presented by indexed swing contracts, buyers and sellers need to employ sophisticated methodologies to value and optimise them. A further challenge posed by these complex assets is how best to incorporate them into an overall risk management strategy.

This workshop will outline key methodologies to derive appropriate hedging strategies for complex assets and demonstrate how to incorporate the elements of uncertainty in indexed swing contracts into the overall portfolio’s risk metrics calculations.

By attending this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Analyse a portfolio of gas swing contracts including key features such as minimum bill, make up, carry forward and indexation
  • Model gas prices to capture indexation
  • Effectively hedge gas swing contracts
  • Extend hedging to account for indexation
  • Gain practical experience of industry leading models
